What Xanax (alprazolam) is and what it is used for?

Xanax is a medication that is used for sedation having an active ingredient called alprazolam. Xanax (alprazolam) belongs to a class of medicines known as benzodiazepines that work by affecting neurotransmitters in the brain, promotes sleep, reduce anxiety and worry and produce calming effect.

Xanax (alprazolam) tablets are only used to treat severe anxiety or the anxiety induced by depression. Do not use Xanax (alprazolam) for the treatment of depression as it may provoke your suicidal thoughts. It can also be used for panic disorder.

Xanax (alprazolam) tablets should only be used for a short-term treatment of anxiety that the therapy must not exceed 12 weeks, including a period where the dose is gradually reduced (this phenomenon of gradual dose reduction is called dose tapering) in order to avoid withdrawal effects alprazolam.

How it works?

Xanax (alprazolam), like other benzodiazepines, has an affinity for the benzodiazepine receptors (both BNZ-1 & BNZ-2) in the brain. It facilitates the inhibitory chemical activity of gamma-aminobutyric acid, which mediates both pre- and post-synaptic inhibition in the central nervous system (CNS). It also works by enhancing the effect of GABA by interacting with GABA-A receptors.

What you need to know before you take Xanax

Do not take Xanax (alprazolam):

·         If you are allergic to alprazolam or other benzodiazepines

·         If you suffering from ‘myasthenia gravis’ a disease that causes very weak and tired muscles.

·         If you are suffering from severe chest problems or breathing difficulties

·         If you are suffering from ‘sleep apnoea’ - that is a condition in which your breathing becomes irregular. Sometimes, breathing stops for a short period, while you are asleep.

·         If you are suffering from hepatic problems.

How to Take Xanax (alprazolam)?

Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has prescribed you. Do not take Xanax (alprazolam) with an alcoholic drink.

Dosage:

The recommended dose is:

Adults

The treatment with alprazolam is usually started by a single dose of 250 microgram or 500 microgram three times a day. This results in a total dose of 750 micrograms up to 1500 micrograms a day. If an increase in dose is required your doctor will do this by gradually increasing the dose. This gradual increase in dose is started with the night time dose before sleep making sure that you are alert in your daily activities during the day. If you experience any of the side effects your doctor may lower your dose.

The elderly

If you are an older patient or you are suffering from renal or hepatic problems you must start your treatment with a lower dose i.e., 250 micrograms three times a day (total 750 micrograms a day). This dose may be gradually increased (if needed) and also if you do not experience any sort of side effects.

Use in children and adolescents

Xananx (alprazolam) is not recommended for children and adolescents under the age of 18 years.

If you take more Xanax than you should

It is important for you to not take more tablets than you are prescribed. If you do accidentally take too many tablets you might experience drowsiness, confusion, feeling cold, slurred speech, drop in blood pressure and difficulty in breathing. If you do accidentally take too many tablets, seek medical attention immediately.

If you forget to take Xanax (alprazolam)

If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless if it is time for your next dose. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.

If you stop taking Xanax (alprazolam)

Always seek advice of your doctor before you stop taking Xanax (alprazolam) tablets as its stoppage require dose tapering (gradual reduction of dose). If you stop taking the tablets or reduce the dose suddenly you can get ‘rebound’ effects which might cause you to become temporarily more anxious or causes restlessness or you may experience difficulty in sleeping. These symptoms will go away with time as your body start re-adjusting.

Pregnancy and breast-feeding

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding mother, or you may be thinking to get pregnant or you are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before starting treatment with this medicine. Do not breast-feed while taking Xanax (alprazolam), as like other benzodiazepines this drug also pass into breast milk.

Driving and using machines


Xanax (alprazolam) may make you feel sleepy or dizzy and you might lose your concentration so it is very important for you to not operate machinery until you become aware how your body is responding to these tablets.

Xanax (alprazolam) can affect your ability to drive as it makes you feel sleepy or dizzy. So, do not drive while taking this medicine until you know how you are affected by this medicine.
